Usually made with Gadus morhua, In addition to other species. In fact, this vitamin complex is framed in the line of commercial cod liver oils. The investor also noted that because of a “prudent” increase in R&D spending, margins had declined to the lowest in the industry, but said with significant revenue growth GSK’s margins should increase, even with continued research investment. While Scott's Emulsion has a lot of recent publicity, this product has an antiquity dating back to the late 19th century. It said pharmaceuticals and vaccines should be kept separate, adding it was not recommending a sale of the vaccines division, as had been rumoured. The company’s shares rose in the days after the update, and City analysts were positive about the targets, while Royal London Asset Management, a top 30 shareholder, publicly expressed its support for the strategy.Įlliott said the sales target looked “highly achievable” as GSK stood to make up to £6bn from respiratory syncytial virus and meningitis vaccines that are in development, up to £5bn from new HIV drugs, and a further £2bn from a chronic hepatitis B treatment. It said that if the issues were addressed, GSK’s share price could rise by up to 45% before next year’s breakup, and “much more in the years beyond”.Īt the investor day, GSK set an ambitious sales target of £33bn by 2031 for the pharmaceuticals and vaccines business, which is almost as much as the £34bn achieved by the whole group, including consumer health, last year. It also recommended GSK consider any opportunities to sell the consumer arm before the demerger. “Despite the strengths of its people, its vaccines and its drugs, GSK has a poor record of execution and value creation,” the investor wrote.Įlliott called for executive bonuses to be linked to more ambitious targets, including a 32% operating profit margin by 2026, as well as achieving research and development (R&D) milestones. It pointed to Witty’s 2015 sale of the cancer business to Novartis followed by a re-entry into oncology under Walmsley in 2018. She hit back at critics by describing herself as a “change agent” at an investor day last week.Įlliott attacked GSK’s underperformance of more than a decade, its “overly bureaucratic” research operation, and inconsistent strategy. Some investors have questioned whether she is the right person to lead New GSK because she lacks a scientific background. The letter ratchets up the pressure on Walmsley, a former L’Oréal executive who led the consumer health venture before replacing Sir Andrew Witty as GSK chief executive four years ago. GSK shares closed 1.3% higher at £14.38 on Thursday. “Elliott strongly believes that the future CEOs of New GSK and consumer health must have the skillsets and expertise to match their respective tasks at hand.” “Elliott is not advocating a specific outcome but is arguing for a robust process,” it wrote. This would force Walmsley, who plans to lead the company through its shake-up and become boss of New GSK, to reapply for her job, but Elliott stopped short of demanding she should go. It insisted GSK appoint new board directors with deep pharmaceutical and consumer health expertise to launch a process to select “the best executive leadership” for the pharmaceuticals and vaccines business, called New GSK, and the consumer health division whose brands include Sensodyne and Nicorette. ICR recognition software operates with individual characters by splitting symbols into elements such as lines, curves, or loops, to identify exactly what kind of character it is.Īlthough this method comes with its limitations, ICR tools recognize highly structured, that is, evenly arranged characters. It deals with the recognition of separate handwritten typed characters. ICR is an improved OCR or more precisely a type of handwritten text detection. They target handwritten rather than printed text and are incorporated into most modern recognition systems. Technologies like Intelligent character recognition (ICR) and Intelligent word recognition (IWR) are advanced subtypes of the standard optical character recognition (OCR) systems. The images are converted into text using optical recognition technology. With recognition, the picture is processed into a text that can be edited on a PC, without having to retype it by hand. Instead, they are a set of pixels that collectively form a pattern of text. Such images do not contain text available for editing yet. They can be obtained by scanning or photographing paper documents, books, letters, and so on. An image of a page represents a digital copy of text and other possible content. OCR is the process of retrieving text from a picture. Modern text recognition technologies Optical character recognition Such a method is also called feature extraction or feature detection and is utilized for the identification of both typed and written texts. A slightly modified approach is employed in this case, namely the recognition of separate features, such as lines, curves, and other sections of letters. To make it clearer, OCR recognizes all characters one by one by applying this method.įor handwritten text and other rare or nonstandard fonts, the conventional comparison of pixel matrices may not be applicable at all. This method is referred to as pattern matching and is mostly utilized in the recognition of printed texts. Once they match, the individual character is considered to be recognized. The easiest and still widely employed text recognition process involves matrix matching: with each letter in the initial image decomposed into pixel matrixes and then correlated with the matrixes held in the computer. Both technologies are very similar, but OCR is already in an advanced state, whereas HTR is still in an early phase. This type of handwriting recognition would provide a great opportunity to automate the workflow of many businesses, thus simplifying the work of a human being. Handwritten text recognition (HTR) describes a computer-assisted automated approach to the deciphering of written records. And finally, some scanners also have some kind of OCR software which you can use, be it a built-in software, or a downloadable tool provided by a hardware manufacturer. Another solution is to scan handwritten text and use desktop or online OCR-powered applications. Try recognizing handwritten text with a mobile application which has OCR features. My personal favorite would be Squidbecause of the multiple features it provides. To recognize handwritten text from images, use OCR software. Since Mixbus is, in part, marketed as a DAW for audio professionals who've learned their craft on large consoles, it's not so surprising to see that it provides several tape‑style features that conventional DAW users may find odd. On the surface, that doesn't sound like a big deal, but when you begin to realise that you don't need to have a certain tool selected in order to get to a function or menu, it becomes apparent that, after a little time spent with Mixbus, you can get things done a lot more quickly. It's clear that the makers of Mixbus set out to combine well‑loved features from other DAWs while avoiding the quirky and sometimes cumbersome flaws of others.Īfter noodling around for a bit, I started to notice that almost any function can be accessed through right‑clicking. Fortunately, handy tooltips aid in acquainting yourself with the program. The transport area holds more functions than any other DAW I've come across. Once you've opened a session in Mixbus, you're greeted by a window that should look pretty familiar to users of other DAWs: tracks going down the left side, transport on top, and loads of buttons and switches to call up different functions. This is a very enticing feature, since it allows users to continue using their current DAW, yet have their tracks mixed in Mixbus. The other added benefit of using Jack is that if you want to use just the mixing element of Mixbus, it will allow you to run the output of your favourite DAW tracks into Mixbus. Setting up Jack is pretty straightforward and, besides allowing you to use Mixbus, it also enables other cool routing options, such as piping the output of iTunes into your DAW. Jack recognises any Core Audio interface, and has a simple workaround for use with the internal Mac soundcard. Jack is a separate, free application that enables simple to complex routing of audio inside your Mac. To get started in Mixbus, you first need to set up Jack Pilot. With that kind of credibility, you have to take notice when they claim to have created a virtual mixer based on their 32‑series and MR‑series consoles, especially when it's being offered at an introductory price of $79. In case the name Harrison is not familiar, to you, they are best known for the top‑end, large‑format consoles used to mix all your favourite films, as well as a little collection of toe‑tappers called Michael Jackson's Thriller. Many of the features described in this review are, of course, common to Ardour and Mixbus, but for the sake of simplicity I'll refer to Mixbus throughout. Mixbus itself is thus not open‑source, as the mixer uses proprietary code developed by Harrison Consoles. Broadly speaking, it combines the existing Ardour recording and mixing functionality with a custom mixer. Mixbus is a customised Mac OS X version of the open‑source program Ardour (which, unlike Mixbus, is also available for the Linux platform). |t was with this notion in mind that the makers of Mixbus set out to create a new DAW that, while not reinventing the wheel, improves in areas where others fall short and offers something no other DAW can boast: a million‑dollar mixer. Just about every music production professional, amateur and even dilettante is already committed to one of the current crop of major digital audio workstations, and so fully entrenched in its eccentricities that switching to another is probably not a viable consideration. Note the red gain‑reduction meters of the compressor.ĭoes the pro audio market need another digital audio workstation program? Harrison Consoles and Ardour believe the answer is 'yes'. Easy access to EQ and compressor controls is one of its strengths. Here you can see I'm using Mixbus as the mixer for my Logic session, a great way to get your feet wet with the new program. They have the biggest penis to body ratio out of Testing other shells until they find a functional female. Acornīarnacles cross-fertilize with nearby barnacles by extending their penises outside of their shells and There is only one breeding season and it occurs in fall. You can often identifyĪcorn barnacles habitat by the grayish-white “barnacle zone” found on coasts. Since they use their cirri to absorb oxygen, acorn barnaclesĬan extract oxygen from both water and air, making them extremely adaptable. The upper mid intertidal zone (Fish, 1996). During winter, barnacles do not feed and rely solely on reserves (White, 2008).Īcorn barnacles are common and exist all over the world. The barnacle has valves it can use to seal off this small hole, which serves as protection from predators(White, 2008). The acorn barnacle uses it’s cirri (feet) to capture it’s food through a small opening in the top of it’s outer shell. Once this process is complete and the barnacle reaches sexual maturity, the barnacle is finally an adult. The barnacle, now a juvenile, starts the process of forming six hard plates around it’s body (Fish, 1996). The time it takes to find this place varies, but once it is found, the cyprid glues it’s head to it’s new home. The cyprid’s goal is to find a place to find a suitable place to spend the rest of it’s life, since the adult barnacle is sessile. It eventually evolves into the cyprid larvalstage. It goes through five different stages of growth over 6 months. The barnacle starts out as a nauplius, a free-swimming larva hatched from a fertilized egg. The acorn barnacle is a common and widespread intertidal organism that can be up to 15 millimeters in diameter (White, 2008). On open sites, barnacles are short and squat, but in crowded colonies, their bodies elongate as individuals squeeze up for a bit of space between neighbors.Acorn barnacles can reach up to 15 mm. Of several barnacle species on the West Coast, the acorn barnacle is conspicuous for its beautiful red striations. After several sweeps, the cirri are withdrawn into the body cavity, and comb-like mouthparts scrape food particles into the barnacle’s mouth. Once they find an appropriate object, they release an adhesive substance from large cement glands at the base of their antennae, jettison their swimming legs and begin secreting calcium carbonate shells that will provide shelter for the rest of their lives.īarnacles feed by sweeping long featherlike appendages through the water to catch floating plankton. Tiny free-swimming larvae leave these colonies to seek new homes, preferentially settling on objects with the chemical odor of other barnacles. On rocks and pilings, barnacles grow in gigantic dense colonies. Everything from whales and sea turtles to crabs must either scrape off these crusty creatures or risk being engulfed by them. Whitish barnacles encrust boats and nearly every other solid object that spends time submerged in salt water. |
